Happy Tails

Each dog here came from a less-than-wonderful background. Some dogs have come from places where they were grossly neglected; other dogs came from homes that just didn't have time for them. Still other dogs had no home at all, and were found wandering the streets or country roads. All our dogs are safe, healthy, and happy now.

Some of these stories are from our days as Nebraska Heart Bandits, of dogs who we helped get a better life. We look forward to helping more dogs in the years to come under the new banner of "Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue!"

Our First Happy Tail: Tubby Toby

Toby was the first adoptee to leave Nebraska Heart Bandits after being pulled from a Grand Island, NE shelter. He captured everyone's heart right away, and we're so happy to know that Toby has a loving home. He will never be abandoned to wait for years in a backyard kennel ever again, and that is a true "happy tail!"

Toby: Before

Picture

Toby lived in a kennel his entire life. He did not receive healthy food or clean water, and he rarely received human attention. His past owners admitted to “just throwing scraps over the fence” for Tobys’s meals.  His kennel had no gate, no door; Toby was not allowed to leave the waste filled enclosure for years. When Toby came to Heart Bandits, he had kennel cough, worms, mites, and was severely overweight from lack of exercise.

Toby: After

Now, Toby is healthy boy with lots of love to give. He is good with other dogs, and loves to receive attention from people. He receives daily walks and nutritious food at his foster home. There is nothing left of the shy boy who used to hide in his dog house! His sweet spirit and loving demeanor are exactly why we rescue; underneath every neglected dog is a great pet who is waiting to learn to love and trust again.

UPDATE: Toby is Famous!

Picture
No, not really; but, isn't such a neat picture a great testament to how much Toby's new family loves him! He's definitely a super-star to everyone here at Heart Bandits.

Every dog is worth rescue, and Toby is a huge testament to that. We're so happy that he's in a loving home.

Super Special Happy Tail : Peek - a - Boo!

This "Happy Tail" means a whole lot to Madonna Kilpatrick, member and trainer for Nebraska Heart Bandits. Madonna's dog, Issabelle, was born in an Eastern Nebraska puppy mill... the same puppy mill that Peek spent 10 years of her life in. What's more... Peek-a-Boo is Issabelle's MOTHER! What a joyful thing; to be able to free your dog's mother from commercial slavery!

Peek-a-Boo: Before

Picture
Peek was very scared when she first left the puppy mill. She was very dirty, and very sick. Peek was one of many dogs pulled from this puppy mill to test positive for deadly heart worm.

After about two weeks at the veterinarian, receiving rest, tests, treatment, and lots of love, Peek found a new home.

Peek-a-Boo: After

Picture
Safe. Loved. Living now in the lap of luxury, Peek-a-Boo is finally freed. Puppy mill mothers are little more than slaves, alive to breed, nurse, and wait. Now, Peek will have the thrill of squirrel-chasing, the feel of wet grass under her feet, the love of a real family, and the veterinary care she deserves.

After 10 years in a puppy mill, I cannot think of another dog who deserves a home more.

Snowball Melts   --  Now Gunner in the Heart Bandits' Army of Love!

Picture
When he first came to Heart Bandits, his name was Snowball. But, unlike a Snowball, this boy was warm, fuzzy, and full og love! Eskie puppyhood lasts a long time, and Snowball had an energy level that his old home just couldn't keep up with. They tried their best, but in the end, Snowball had to find a new home.

So, he came to Heart Bandits, and soon he was ready for adoption. That's when Katelyn and Clyde told us they were looking for a new friend. Snowball was renamed Gunner, and is now living happily with his new family.

Pip's Angel

Picture
Although Pip has not yet found a foster or forever home, she knows she is loved! In addition to being one of Jim's favorite dogs to come out of the June puppy mill rescue, Pip is being sponsored by John Keogh. We are so appreciative of John's support, especially because Pretty Pip is heart worm positive. She is receiving treatment for the illness, and hopefully she will soon be ready to adopt out.

We could not help as many dogs as we do without donor support. It is especially amazing when one person comes forward to take special care of one of our dogs. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, John!

Stormy Weather ... No More!

Picture
Stormy's life has been a little... well, stormy! Born in an Eastern Nebraska puppy mill, Stormy lived in filthy conditions with no training or veterinary care for the first 18 months of his life. Then, our rescue came in and rescued Stormy and his sister Lilly, pictured here, along with more than 40 other dogs from the puppy mill they were trapped in.

Stormy had a severe kidney and bladder infection from drinking too little of the already dirty water available to him at the puppy mill, and had to receive a battery of antibiotics before he was well enough to neuter. Finally neutered and healthy, Stormy went to a family home.

Unfortunately, Stormy's bad weather was far from over. For the next few months, Stormy was mostly confined to a crate or a garage because the family had problems with his housebreaking. The family admitted they felt the best thing was to return Stormy.
Picture
Stormy came back to our rescue, and our wonderful foster mom Shirley spent two weeks working with Stormy to help him understand house manners. Two whole weeks with no accidents, no behavior issues, and no health problems meant that we were ready to look for a Forever Home for Stormy.

Dakota is a young man with a passion for dogs, and Stormy is a young dog with a passion for people. We think a match has been made this time! Here you see him with his new family - Brandon and his two other dogs, a chihuahua mix and a little dachshund.

Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue is a permanent resource for ALL our dogs; any dog who comes through our doors has a permanent ticket home! We will never give up on a dog - and Stormy is living proof that we give second - and third! - chances.

Puppy Litter Number Two - Sissie and Elsie's Girls

Picture
This is little Gracie! She recently went home with a wonderful woman named Linda, who has taken some great pictures of this little cutie! These puppies came to us from the same mill owner we took 46 dogs from in June. These pups and their moms came to us in November, after she was banned from having any pets for the next few years.

We're so glad we could make sure these puppies got the right start in life!
Picture
This is little Holly! Another one of the puppies we rescued in November, she is a ball of fluffy fun. Her new owner, Allison just loves her to death, and has also shared a few great candids with us. Watching these pups grow from birth through their first tumbling steps and placing them with loving families has been a wonderful experience!

The puppies' mothers, Sissie and Elsie, went to Kansas City with our good friend Laurel from KC Heart Bandits. Laurel was able to line up homes for both our little moms, and there are happy endings all around.

Little Hannah

Picture
This is little Hannah, one of Jim's rescues, in her new home with owners Sam and Tami! Don't they look happy?  We love to see our Eskies settled into their new homes, and we make every effort to contact our adoptive homes a few times after they've taken their new friend home. We want every home to be a Forever Home, and we never want our adopters to feel lost or frustrated after they take an Eskie home! We look forward to more updates about this great little dog.

Special Lady Elsie

Picture
This is little mommy Elsie Eskie! She gave birth to two puppies the day Jim brought her home from the puppy mill owner who had to surrender her by court order. Her puppies grew up strong and healthy, and after spending plenty of time living in the lap of luxury with Jim, she went to Kansas City with our friend Laurel from KC Heart Bandits. We know she'll be happy in the home Laurel found for her, and hope to hear good things in the future!
