We regret to announce the closure of our rescue operations. Please see the following note from our Director.
To Whom It May Concern:
Today, I am writing one of the most difficult notes I have ever done. I MUST announce that the Nebraska American Eskimo Dog Rescue is going to discontinue doing any rescue work until further notice. Most all those that know me personally realize that I am struggling with several different health issues. I have actually used the dog rescue work in the past to help me forget about these issues/problems. But after this  past weekend when there was a dog in need and I was unable to help in any way because of being so severely ill...I must walk away. I WILL NOT do this unless I can do it properly. I can say that our group has done a wonderful job helping many many dogs in need! I would estimate it to be close to a hundred. At the same time, it is important as a rescue that the rescue supplies excellent care in all areas. We can no longer do that for the main reason of the financial burden that every rescue has. I explained to a person last week that I estimated that our rescue spent an average of $700.00 per dog last year on care. If I could do it all over again.....yes I would! I would change a few things but I would always help in any way I could. I love the American Eskimo Dog! Ever since I had the privilege of having my "Special Angel Dog Chelsea" come in to my life, I was hooked on the breed. I have three Eskies still at home. They are the most important part of my life and will continue to be so. I feel as if I am letting you all down and most of all so many many dogs that are in need. I apologize and want to thank the so many wonderful persons that have helped our rescue! There are SO MANY of you! God Bless each and every one of you. Take care my friends!!

Who is Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue?

Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue is an all volunteer organization that specializes in the rescue, care, and training of the American Eskimo Dog. For a period of time, we were NE Heart Bandits, a chapter of Heart Bandits, Inc. It is our pleasure to continue to have friends in that organization, even as we move toward becoming our own non-profit entity. Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue is a licensed rescue organization with the state of Nebraska.

Our volunteers perform three essential functions for this breed in Nebraska.

1) Our volunteers RESCUE American Eskimo Dogs. We pull them from shelters before "shelter shock" sets in, or their euthanization date arrives. We prioritize surviving Eskies who come from abusive or neglected backgrounds, from puppy mills, or found wandering as strays.

2) Our volunteers PLACE American Eskimo Dogs who are in danger of being surrendered to the shelter or humane society in loving, caring homes.

3) Our volunteers TRAIN and SOCIALIZE all American Eskimo Dogs of all backgrounds. Our rescue has the services of a trainer at our disposal for correspondence troubleshooting and obedience classes, and our members have up to 25 years of experience working with this breed.

We have partnered with Heart Bandits American Eskimo Dog Rescue as a resource for this breed in Nebraska. We are a former chapter of Heart Bandits National, and are proud to continue our independent affiliation with this wonderful group of people! We look forward to remaining the primary source for adoption, adoption advocacy, and breed information for the American Eskimo Dog in Nebraska.

Where is Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue Located?

Smile!
Nebraska American Eskimo Rescue is not a shelter; all our dogs are placed in loving foster homes until the day an appropriate adopter is located for them. Because we are not a shelter, we do not have office hours during which you can visit with us and the dogs in our care. For more information on how to meet with us or with a potential new best friend, check out our ADOPT AN ESKIE page.

What is an American Eskimo Dog?

The American Eskimo Dog is neither American nor Eskimo! These dogs were developed in Germany, and were known as the German White Spitz until World War II, when the name was changed to the American Eskimo Dog both for their beloved status in this country, and for their snowy, nordic looks. Eskies are sometimes referred to as a "Spitz." In fact, the term "Spitz" is a descriptor for any dog with pricked ears and a tail which curls over the back. The American Eskimo Dog is bred in three different sizes: Toy, Miniature, and Standard.

The American Eskimo Dog is a clever, energetic clown. A friend to children, companion to adults, and beloved by all who meet him, the American Eskimo Dog is able to adapt to any family with sufficient training and socialization. Eskies that have reached rescue often do not have that training or socialization, and can exhibit the more negative breed traits.

American Eskimo dogs are not for everyone. They bark, they shed, and they can become very shy without proper socialization. Before you consider adopting an Eskie, learn about both the positive and negative traits of the breed. You can read more about the Eskie temperament and history on the ALL ABOUT ESKIES page.

Why Adopt?

Simply put, adoption and rescue is the right thing to do for anyone not intending to actively show their dog in AKC Conformation Trials and enter into a responsible breeding program guided by a mentor who is AKC active and active with the American Eskimo Dog national breed club. There are currently no breed club active/AKC active breeders in Nebraska, so beware of puppy sales in our area.

Responsible breeders are careful stewards of the breed. They breed only the best temperaments and physical structure, in order to improve the breed as a whole. They breed their dogs to eliminate such issues as shyness, sharpness, poor knees, and other traits that are inherent to poorly bred Eskies. Learn more about choosing a good breeder on our BREEDERS page.

A rescued Eskie is a happy Eskie. We match each dog to the best home, so that there are very few problems with the dog fitting into his new family. And, when problems arise, we're here to help you and your Eskie through anything. These dogs want nothing more than to dance with you when you're happy, lick away your tears when you are sad, and be bravely by your side throughout their lives. Giving a rescue dog a second chance to do those things is a wonderful act!
